I heard to day on the BBC that Putin gave his best speech in the US after
hios meeting with Bush-- he was much warmer and open, even expressing some
emotions and respect for some of the people he had hunted back in his KGB
days. Bush must be giving him acting lessons!
On the other hand, the news report went on to note that the Russians are the
only country so far to give acknowledgement to the Northern Alliance as the
"legitimate government of Afghanistan" even though Afghantistan is
officially speaking a state (or a bunch of starving people) without a
government. Down, boys! Just because you've been supporting the Northern
Alliance for many years with weapons and intelligence doesn't give you the
right to annoint them the "offical government." Sounds like the Russians
haven't learned very much from their past failures in backing puppet
governments in Afghanistan.
If anything, this premature move could cause a little rallying around flag
of the hated Taliban!
