last night went to art opening at
Mexic-arte museum (5th and Congress)
for the opening of a retrospective
of the art of Luis Jimenez.
Luis went to UT in the 60s afterwards
becoming very well-known for his
fiberglass sculptures in a Pop Art
style; later on his style evolved into
a re-interpretation of Chicano culture.
i well remember him building these
fiberglass sculptures in the back yard
of his slum apartment near Canal St
where my sister-in-law worked as his
assistant for a time.
present were a number of ghetto-ites:
Jack Rife, Terry and David Martinez,
and Cliff Endres (who will be returning
to Turkey as soon as the planes start
flying again).
governor Rick Perry was there also and
forced me to shake hands with him. it
is difficult not to take the profered
hand of a handsome 6'4" guy in a good
suit.
Is not this the same Rick Perry who
gathered the employees of the Austin
office of some Texas govt. agency
and did a number with 2 shiny new dimes?
in the spirit of all new managers (see any
Dilbert cartoon) he would necessary feel
that he had to intimidate the workers.
As the story was told (am I remembering
this aright?), he held aloft 2 shiny
new dimes asking "Do you know what these
are? These are a NEW PAIR OF DIMES"
(=new paradigm), i.e. no goofing off
or you're toast.
Ed, did you not tell us this story based
on Marilyn's witnessing of this?
I need to get this story right so I'll
know if I said the right thing to Gov.
Perry.
