Jeff and Jim,
I got a DirecTV dish and signed a year lease so now I own the dish and the
box. The guy that installed said the dish is worth about $45 and the box
is worth over $250. The dish is attached to a 6' fence beside my house and
I was concerned about someone just cutting the wires and unscrewing it and
walking off with it. That was why I asked how expensive it would be to
replace it.

I wish I had never cut the cable. I misunderstood when they said you don't
get local channels from the satellite. I thought I would still get the
major networks and all I would lose was the local news. WRONG. You don't
get any major networks on the satellite on DirecTV. So I had to buy rabbit
ears from Radio Shack. They are always falling over and getting out of
kilter. I have never been able to figure out how to wire the satellite box
so I can record anything on the VCR. I cannot record the ABC news every
day like I used to, because it comes over the rabbit ears and if I leave
home in the morning to go to work, you can be sure the cats will knock the
rabbit ears over before time to start recording the news.

The worst problem with the whole satallite thing is how complicated it
is. There are so many channels and you would never remember the numbers,
so you have to go scrolling around in this little menu which doesn't have
names of channels but little symbols. There are about 500 some odd numbers
and only some of them have channels on them (unless you pay horrendous huge
charges every month). So any time I want to change channels, it's scroll
on and on and on for 15 minutes or so until I find the channel I want. And
remember it's a major conversion if I am going from satellite to rabbit
ears or back.

I finally just had them cut off the satellite because it had been months
since I watched it. In fact, I don't watch TV any more. The news is on
the internet, and I can do without the $40 a month fee. I did watch Peter
Jennings on rabbit ears a couple of days after the attack last week.
