Charlie,
Very interesting. I am seriously considering setting up camp in the
Nothern
Highlands myself but the war thing has me hesitating. Kids in Paloma
suits,
how neat.
A few hundred miles to the north, another 3rd World town, sleepy Silver
City, NM has had 3 major displays for peace. The first was a march
through
the downtown area to the campus where speakers and musicians(?) put on a
long show. About 200 attended, very few of them students--actually more
Rainbow kids from the mountain camps in the nearby national forests than
students. The second was a "Drumming for Peace" in a downtown park, the
same
200 in attendance, and the Greater Gila Percussion Ensemble augmented by
Rainbow kids holding forth. Again, virtually no college students.
A full page ad in the local paper with names (over 700) of people
protesting
the war came next. A careful study of same reveals precious few Hispanic
surnames. In this little town with a long Hispanic tradition and which
has a
population of some 10,000 (half of them Hispanic) this sets an
interesting
precedent. My take is that my Spanish speaking brothers (fucking
freejacks)
are too cowed by a tradition of being beholden to the man to act
spontaneously for any cause which might be taken as controversial. I'm
glad
to hear that on the other side of the border they are more
demonstrative.
