Mike, yes, it looks pretty good right now but no telling what Karl Rove
will
pull out of his hat between now and 11/04. They will certainly have
enough
money for an avalanche of dark and nasty campaign ads. The troop morale
situation could become an issue or lead to one, the army doesn't like
bush
at all, retirees especially. Dean and Kerry will duke it out over New
Hampshire, the loser will suffer, the winner will get a big push. Dennis
will possibly run well in Iowa. I am encouraged by the news that massive
anti-bush demonstrations are planned for NYC during the repub convention
next summer. Various groups are already applying for permits. It will
get
hot. The natural gas shortage could make it a long winter in the NE. The
drought could make next summer an agricultural disaster. Lots of
potentially
meaningful issues to consider and peruse. But it may take no more than
bush's personal style to unseat him, he's become so one dimensional and
macho, maybe attractive to bubbas and teenage boys but not to little old
ladies. As his ratings suffer so will his corporate support. I watched
the
nightly news last night on NBC (a rare occasion). His daily photo-op,
tour
of the forest fire scene and quest for new legislation for the lumber
companies, was the last story reported, and then very briefly and with
little enthusiasm.
Excellent article on current Bagdad in the latest New Yorker. The
writer,
Jon Lee Anderson, has a Hemingway style of reporting, gives you a
feeling of
intimacy with the situation without wasting a lot of words. It leads one
to
assume that given the current attitude of all parties concerned, Iraq
will
only get worse.
