Byron,

Thanks for sending a link to the David Lazare article in
The Nation

http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20031103&s=lazare

A long confusing article from which one concludes -- what?

My take:

first of all this is/will be no solution.

second of all, this is as Lazare says a demographic
issue.

he follows those who suggest that Israel unilaterally
withdraw to the pre-1967 borders.

it aint going to happen.

1) there are over 200,000 Israelis living in the
west bank.

2) there are 1 million plus Arabs with Israeli
citizenship living in Israel -- despite being second
class citizens, they have no interest in departing
Israel

3) there are some Israelis -- Sharon foremost among
them -- who are waiting for an excuse to run the
Palestinians out of the west bank into Jordan or
into the Gaza strip. ethnic cleansing can't be done
in the light of day, but should there be a big
war or tremendous act of terrorism -- some cover
or other for the deed -- it might happen.

Sharon and others I suspect are quite prepared to
do it, justifying it to themselves as raison d'etat.

in other words, he is I believe prepared to pull a
Slobadan Milosevic type ethnic cleansing if he thinks
he can get away with it under cover of some great
upheaval elsewhere so folks wont notice...much.
of course it will be done as "humanely" as possible:
free transport included.

and sleep like a babe afterwards muttering to themselves
raison d'etat, raison d'etat
