That is a stunning revelation, Steve, but I feel deep down that you are right on track in your conclusion. Twenty years ago I helped a lawyer friend of mine, who was teaching business law at ACC, grade his assignment papers. The quality, or lack of it, was shocking. First goes reading and writing, then I suppose independent opinion evaporates, too. That may account for it.
An elderly librarian in my home town, Castroville, Tx, told me that when she started doing fund raising for the public library she went to the parish priest and asked if he could make a contribution on behalf of the Church. She reported that his face expressed alarm as he stated, "No, you don't want them reading."

Neither is The Rag published any longer, or the Lone Star Dispatch, or The Gar--all of which published me. Deprecating the loss of "free speech" might reflect the government's wishes, but not its actions. The First Amendment only applies to the government, and the pitiful attempts the government makes to squash opinion in this generation pales beside the lack of opinion to be squashed. I teach these kids, remember? The First Amendment is not dying from repression. It thrives on repression. It is dying from disuse. Same as the franchise. It is a list of persons watched as possible subversives who had gathered at a no longer extant frame eight-plex at the North end of Nueces where it joins Guadalupe. The place became nicknamed, The Ghetto. Little did they know that the reason for the gathering was the monthly beer party funded by the campus sales of the humorously controversial Ranger Magazine. It is no longer published--so much for free speech. The evidence for this assualt on personal freedom came to light when some bored UT bureaucrat went finger-walking through some old files in a dean's office and found a document with scathing and deprecating descriptions of people well known to the employee. There were some thirty names, one being the late great Janis Joplin.
