seen her oncet in the Union her visiting Austin 1963 wearing white
blouse with some serious grime growing around the inside of the
collar, serious enough for me to notice, it was world-class collar
grime, it was a statement

(remember i'm 29 then, not 18 like the rest of you)

she sang with the other talent in the little room assigned to
the Folk Music group in the Union -- can't you just summon up
the atmosphere of the Union before its rebuild, Arabs and others
in the room near the door that had the TV, the Chuck Wagon...sigh...
drool...

she sung what I thought were fairly lame covers of black blues.

later on she became Janis Joplin.

alas i never saw her again except a glimpse at Laguardia Airport
oncet where she stood in bedraggled buckskins with 2 musicians
holding guitar cases waiting for her flight.

in an interview this week with Terry Gross, Clive Davis told of
signing Janis Joplin to a major recording label. Said Janis I've
been waiting all my life for this moment. She then propositioned
him that they go find some private space and get it on together
in honor of the moment.

Davis intimated probably truthfully to Gross that he didn't go
along with this.
