Jon,
We have those restaurants in Austin, and a few of them are able to stay in business over time, but the vast majority of food outlets are price fixers with only large quantity choices on the menu. Food is cheap compared to rent and labor so the heaped up plates are a draw. The only self defense we have is to order to go, slide a third of it on a plate to eat there and take the rest home. If you are not close to home this isn't advisable. Some places won't allow carry out. It is pathetic to watch customers at places like the all-you-can-eat Golden Corral where people can't seem to help but overeat. Grossly obese patrons by the dozens gather there daily. The only carry-outs permitted are containers provided for food which can be weighed and priced at $3.49 per pound. The food isn't all that bad but I object to eating the price fixe of $8.99 worth of it in one sitting, which amounts to close to three pounds of food according to their own price structure! Most people eat their money's wort
