A mini-tour of downtown and East Austin in the March for Unity

Susi,
What's with Gravy--what happened to Gilbert?
I had a telephone solicit call the other day and when I reached for the receiver, I knocked-over, spilled and broke my souvenir July 4 wine glass with the sturdy black stem. Damn, I hate it when something like that happens. I had a nice conversation with Lonn and told him of our Summer adventure in Eugene and he was so happy to hear that you are alive and well.

For ghetts and others, et al:
The March for Unity was a nice workout, 26 blocks at a leisurely pace in perfect weather--74 degrees, balmy and cloudy. After a delicate breakfast taco, Daniel's treat, I marched with Daniel Yanez, his partner, Diana Persa, the lovely Anita Villereal, and the head of PODER, Janie, who invited me to another event at Fiesta Gardens in April, and, of course, a cast of hundreds four blocks long. Michael E. litterally crossed our path at Sixth and Congress, walking from Madelon's Congress Ave. studio, and he joined in about the half way mark. He later brought his car to take me back to mine.
I felt sorry for Capitol 10,000 runners, of whom I caught a glimpse passing through two intersections downtown from a few blocks away. The traffic control people were out in force so the progress was smooth and protected. People tend to stay away from downtown during that much publicized marathon run.
The program at the AFL/CIO building on W. 11th and Lavaca included speeches by political luminaries like Gonzalo and Lloyd and mariachis. But the best part was by a Ballet Folklorico Mexikayotl dance company. They performed a well rehearsed dance by a dozen of the most beautiful young girls dressed in wonderfully mobile matching pink dresses with white trim who whirled their tiered skirts and tapped to the music. The hair was perfect, makeup pristine and they were all the same size if quite different in age and grade in school. Of course, the tv cameras had already gone by the time they were on.
I recommend this event every year.
I had the privilege of meeting Cesar Chavez back during the Huelga marches of the '70s and today he has become imortalized on a postage stamp. The event brought back a lot of very good memories.
Frances
