Wayne "Smitty," et al.,
Those are just the kind of pictures that would be fun to pin up on the MEMORIES BOARD I want to prop up on the Airstream. I hope you also bring a GANG PLUG to rig up the clamp lights we plan to hang over the serving table so we can free up some plugs for CROCK POTS, which are a great way to safely serve stuff. I encourage crock pots. If you see Maryann ask her if she would gather together any SERVING UTINSELS she may have to put in a basket on the table to parse out for the different dishes that may surface. I plan to install a TIP VASE on the serving table for the table and chair rental expense of $76, so far, if it goes over $65 beyond that, maybe we can get the Texas Ghetto site up and running again. Then we could have a new page of ghetto reunion 2004 photos so that those who miss it can enjoy a visual essence. Everything is falling into place. On Friday please remember to inventory the paper plates, cups, and utinsels in that big cardboard box full that we found.
I sure hope Roger treats us to individual portraits, of those willing to pose for internet exposure with all their clothes on, of course.
Love you all,
Frances

Sharon,
Everyone's mind is spinning out names of those remembered. I remember Candelario Saenz and took some YD bus trips he was on.
Bill Helmer, I heard, had some health problemss and I doubt that he was contacted about the reunion. Byron Black wrote back from Jakarta that I forgot to mention him in the roll call of Ranger editors. I sent a belated invite to Alyce Guynn (sp?), Kay Northcott, and Sharon Majors. Travis Rivers lives in CA but he came a couple of times in past years.
It should be fun.

Hi, Frances:
Yes, I remembered later. Age! Thanks for the history. Why don't you write
about it?
I knew one of the Ranger editors pretty well, but I forget his last name.
Was his name Bill Helmer or something like that? I may have the name totally
wrong, but I remember he had worked for Playboy in Chicago. Anyway, I was in
a few of the groups you named: Daily Texan, Young Democrats, then on to SDS,
even the Spelunkers until I actually had to go into a cave and found out I
was claustrophobic, and, most of all, the Student Union, just sitting around
and drinking coffee. I saw Pancho Howse on the list and hope he's there, and
by the way, what ever happened to Sara Speights? Did you know Candelario
(Candy) Saenz? He is now a professor of anthropology at an Eastern college
and has written a couple of well-respected books. His father was sheriff of
Duval County, and he had lots of wonderful tales to tell back when I knew
him well. I was in touch with him a couple of years ago, but haven't seen
him since the Sixties.
Anyway, I do think we'll attend the party so I'll see you soon, and thanks
again for thinking of me.
Sharon

Sharon,
It was "The Ranger" humor magazine and they were sold on campus for a
quarter, a nickel of which went to the monthly beer party. To actually
sell them was one way to get invited to the Ranger party. This was
during the time of Travis Rivers who served as business mgr. for the
eventually too-controversial publication.
I'm sure you remember the bru ha ha. They went through five editors in a
very short span, each in turn getting fired for one editorial
transgression or another, and I knew three of them. Billy Jim Strong,
who is coming over from Montgomery County, was a staff writer for it.
Gilbert Shelton was an editor. Wayne Johnson is another, but he lives in
VA and won't be here. Pat Brown was also an editor--she is also invited.
If I run accross the actual party address, I'll send it, for mapquest.
Perhaps I should elaborate a bit about the Ghetto group. It is a loose
association of persons who became acquainted through various UT campus
groups in the early '60s: Daily Texan journalists, Student Union folk
singers, bridge nuts, Rangeroos, spelunkers, SDSers, and Young
Democrats, my particular cadre, who were all basically GDI's. The place
we gravitated to, to drink and be merry, was an eight-unit frame
apartment house, no longer extant, behind Dirty Martin's on Nueces,
where it meets Guadalupe. The rents were $40 - $45 a month, and it was
ramshackle even by the standards of the time. Almost like a
counter-culture animal house, it was humorously nicknamed, The Ghetto.
The most exuberant parties were those having the largest cache of Grand
Prize and they often coincided with the Ranger coming out. Some Ranger
parties might have been held there but Travis also had them at his house
on Salado. Those were my favorites.
I'm cc-ing this version of Ghetto history to the list, too, to see if I
got it about right.
Frances
