computer fooling around with and auto/cycle racing.
i vote for the latter. a coupla years ago Clayton
Brantley who was photographing sports for the
Texan and freelancing, took me to the Brick Yard
near College Station in the middle of the summer.
There the stockcars chased one another round
the track for a long long long long time. Did I mention
that this was for a long time? Did I mention the noise?
Even in the shade lee of a building I was wilting away
noticably enough for even Clayton to notice it. I think
he went and got me a soda. The wilting must have
been very palpable as Clayton was not a sensitive
type. In fact Clayton looked more like a serial killer
than anyone I have ever hung out with in my hole life:
colorless hair, pale eyebrows, grossly owerweight,
perfectly ghastly to look at.
However, and this seems more and more significant
as the years roll on, I also got to stand about 8 feet
away from Red Adair, now deceased. He was wearing
his Red Adair fireproofed siren suit (Churchill also
favored this garb as leisure wear and he called it his
siren suit -- why siren I don't know).
Red was the cynosure of all eyes, his hanger-ons
were clearly energized by his proximity. I drank
this all in and it is still with me.
So when Bush brought his 747 in low over the
track at Daytona race track and the hominids
looked up and got the machinery/noise rush
like a junky fix and you ask me will the Republic
not fall?
