Wayne,

I see that you have figured out how to keep yourself busy.

Of all your hobbies, it is rebuilding cars/trucks that most
interests me. What project are you currently doing (or
thinking about doing)?

I had a project i thought about long and hard but I never
got to do it. It involved buying a Geo Metro 3 cyclinder
motor & its transmission & CV shaft from Artie Osborne
of Red River Motors and retrofitting my 15 foot sailboat
into a motor boat. This is explained in detail at
http://charlesumlauf.com/boat.htm where I put it when I
realized that I would never NEVER do it in real life.

So please tell us about your current rebuild project.

Also you might seriously consider coming into town on
Sunday to attend the Red River Motors annual yard party
this Sunday. 91 Red River (a block south of East 1st St).
starts around 2pm - music, food (sort of) and drink.

Mike

Mike: Thats a fair question and deserves a fair answer. I was born in
North Austin and long ago it was a great place to live. Today, if I want to
see a parade, I just walk out to the highway (21E) and watch the fools
driving 90 miles an hour so they can be first in line at the gas station.
For entertainment, I talk with friends on this gizmo, I do hand crafted wood
work, I raise White Doves, Chickens of course, rebuild antique (classic)
cars & trucks, play in the garden raising foods that the squirels and wild
birds like to eat. I wage war against ghopers (on-going). I have built
over a hundred bird houses even though I don't know birds except red ones,
blue ones, and those damn black ones. I have 6 dogs that keep the Post man
at bay but they love to play in the pool. No I don't have a Lear Jet but I
do have a Hot Rod Truck that's almost as fast. Because of some nerve
problems I can't si t still long enough to read much, that's why my spelling
is so terrible. I fought in their dang war but I live peacefully now except
for an occasional duel that I use water ballons for. Life is good in the
country but one wouldn't know that unless they became part of the country.
I use to write a little had a few things published but I gave that up for
lent and never took up the habit since. Well, ole Son that's the story of
this country boys life take it or leave it, I do vote straight line Democrat
and always have but I'm going with Kinky in 06 just to see what happens. Oh
ya, in my garden this year I'm raising corn, blackeyed pease, okra,
tomatoes, ghoards, sun flowers, bell peppers, and weeds.........Amigos, WS

Good news, Wayne. A pharmacist at Drugstore.com
just told me that that at my minimal dosage of Lipitor
I can still eat a half a Texas ruby grapefruit every morning.

I don't agree with you about cities.

If you take Houston as your baseline, you are not gonna
much like cities. But downtown Austin where I live is
not a bad place at all. Luckily we have a very quiet
apartment and we have a Bewick's wren who sings
throughout the day in a tree next to the apartment
house. Also all the pleasant distractions only available
in town are a short walk from here. Many restaurants,
some affordable like the Marrakesh arab food restaurant
on Congress and 10th street and others, for example
Cozzoli's pizza on Congree and 8th street which makes
the most righteous pizza in all of Austin. The nightclub
district just a few blocks from here is pl easant to stroll
around sometimes. There are parades on Congress Ave
with horses sometimes. It is fun also to walk downtown
as well as in west Austin just to enjoy the architecture.
There are handsome highrises downtown and very
interesting examples of vernacular residential houses
built in the early part of the 20th century and some from
the late 19th century throughout close-in Austin.

And most important for me are the libraries. The public
library is just up the street from here and the UT main
library is a 20 minute walk or you can take the shuttle
bus right to it. The shuttle bus stop to the UT library
is 1/2 a block from here.

What do you do out in Bastrop when you get bored?
Maybe you dont get bored that much. I bore easily and
need lots of plot for life to be interesting. It would be
nice to be rich enough and have a helicopter or jet so
one could switch between real country living and one's
in-city pied-a-terre. Another drawback to country living
is all the car driving you have to do just to pick up
groceries and the rent movies.
