Hey. Connie.

Hope most of you guys did catch the Waldo Lydecker reference which was the Key to the (hoped for) irony in the message above.

Shucks. Some of my best friends are photographers, not to mention that Honor and I have invested over 20 years and $15K in photography.....

Thought I might get a "bite" from some on the list.....who weren't careful "readers." Sigh...I have just become tooooo predictable.

There is a really good discussion thread in your post regarding "digital" vs "hand" stuff. I teach the "old fashioned" stuff at Marymount and have just started a new job at the Art Inst. of Wash....teaching "presentation techniques" to a bunch of kids in their (AIW) Int. Design program. Meanwhile, I am going digital as fast as I can so to stay even with at least part of the curve.

My major advantage was always in being able to "draw", something I started doing around..oh, say, four or five that I know of for sure. Most of what goes on these days in the architectural, engineering, interiors and contacting business these days is heavily weighted toward digital. This has advantages and disadvantages.

I will state flatly that NO ONE can ever really learn to SEE...especially the human figure....without putting conte/charcoal to large drawing pad. One simply must have the "freedom" to move around and also to get the "feedback" paper gives you. The drawing tablets are simply too small for people just beginning to learn to see...uh, draw. Drawing IS seeing and it is a very, very difficult practice to master. Enough of that for now.

Hope you is good.

cheers.

Meanwhile....check out Laura at your local video store for the ever so wonderfully venomous Clifton Webb.

Bubba! great to hear (even venom) from you.

I've wondered also about our tech age artists - how, these days picking up a charcoal pencil, or paint brush to do art is downright archaeic; heck, nobody evens uses a pen and pencil to write a letter or note anymore, to the extent, I heard recently grammer school kids are shirking cursive altogether in favor of keyboarding and text messaging...and don't even mention hand drawing professional engineering or architectural plans these days - talk about old style. Drawn animation? Nunhuh. Hi tech art is where it is all going -- moving way out of Bauhaus (hell that was the 40s wasn't it?)

Yes, and wondering also how it must be expensive for these photographers to travel to the Arctic for instance to get their shots - but they may not be rich kids, but rather willing to sleep on someone's couch for 6 months to save the money to buy camera equipment and travel. Part of the passion of youth and art as I recall.

Well, I just go to my job everyday, live in a tangle of time, traffic, tv and fast food culture, so something like this exhibit comes along and I'm fascinated to know that there is such a thing as mulberry paper, or Neneks or to see photos of photos with beans. 'What will they do next' is my quest and I must confess a quiet, uncluttered art exhibit space is such an appealing environment to spend time. Don't worry about mass audiences here - most Bush type people don't care for works of 'art ' if it isn't something that they could see hanging on the wall in their suburban mcmansions.

One might as well settle back for an evening with Ed Wood and be done with it.

Good suggestion, but actually, I've done that already. Thanks anyway.

Regards to you friend, Rev, hope you are feeling cheerier today
    Connie
