At 3:00 PM today in Silver City, NM the temperature reading on the sign
outside the bank was 65D. So far we have had 5" of rain this month, 2" since
last Friday. Most all of this comes in the form of gentle showers, feminine
rain. I see on the news that most of the country is scalding, record heat.
If you are looking to get away from it for awhile I suggest New Mexico, the
whole state is cool at present.
The beyond extreme drought we suffered through until July is ancient
history. I watched arroyos flooding today, incredible torrents of muddy
water, leaping skyward in extreme splashes. Yes, the river is full again but
not real high. The forecast calls for more of the same indefinitely, perhaps
through next week. What last month was dried out dusty pasture is now
jungle, the response of the plants to even a little moisture is incredible.
When it is dry enough I am chopping weeds with a hula hoe, lots of puncture
vine all over the place, give it a few days and the stickers will be hard
and painful. The cultivated plants have been full of flowers, just hope the
coolness doesn't prompt them to drop. Tomatoes in particular have looked
very promising and they love the rain--but not the cool nights and not days
without sun. Ah well, it is so nice to see the other side of nature for
awhile that I cannot complain, nor will I worry too much.
My son sent me the church photos, don't know where he got them. I thought my
cover was secure...
Cool and damp in NM,
G
