[AGL] Monday was nickel beer day

40 years ago, hmmm, seems like only yesterday. I heard something about a
sniper on the radio but understood that the ordeal was over. So I drove over
to meet my wife who worked on campus for lunch. As I drove down the narrow
street that led to the Gregory Gym area I saw students cowering up against
buildings and peeking up at the tower from safe positions. Then I saw some
shots glancing off concrete nearby. The wife was OK and we ate inside at a
cafeteria. On the way out I drove rapidly by the space between buildings
where I was briefly exposed to the line of fire. There were cop cars parked
along the campus streets and they were shooting at the tower top.
When I got home (I lived across the street from Pease Park) I took a
portable radio and binoculars outside to a good vantage point and
listened/watched the tower. Couldn't see much but an occasional puff of
smoke. Eventually there was one grand fusillade with much smoke and noise as
the cops charged Charlie and put an end to it all. What a trip! It will
forever be "The Whitman Tower" to me.
