Clearly the world lost a good man.

In these times he will be hard to replace.

Henry Holman Henry Holman, 93, of Austin passed away Sunday morning October 22, 2006. He was born in Montopolis on June 16, 1913 to Henry and Emma (Bulian) Holman. He was a carpenter by trade (Carpenter's Local #1066), and spent most of his career at the Division of Extension at the University of Texas. But, perhaps the Austin American-Statesman said it best in 1978 that he was a "liberal warhorse who has been a proselytizing Democrat and hell-raising union man for as long as anyone can remember." In her book, Ann Richards referred to him as 'Mr. Democrat.' For decades, he worked tirelessly and effectively behind the scenes for workers and equal rights. On August 25, 1940 he married Mary Louise Alford of Rockdale. Both strong and independent individuals, their 66 years of marriage with their mutual devotion and respect served as the bedrock of strength underlying their many public and private accomplishments. He is survived by his wife, his brother William Scott Holman of Cedar Creek; his children, Theron J. 'Pat' Holman and his wife Ida of Erie, PA; Michael Scott Holman and his wife Suzanne of Austin; Harriett Louise (Holman) Pallas and her husband Spiros of Arlington, VA; his grandchildren Paul Wesley Holman and his wife Susannah Erler of Austin; Jean Louise Holman of Washington D.C.; Susan Marie Holman and Ruth Elizabeth Holman of Erie, PA; numerous nephews and nieces and countless friends. He was proceeded in death by his son, Henry Holman, III; his sister Louise (Holman) Hancock of Austin; and, his sister Dorothy Nell (Holman) Jones of Fredericksburg. On Wednesday October 25 there will be a quiet viewing from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., at Austin-Peel and Son Funeral Home located at 607 E. Anderson Lane (SW corner of IH 35 and Highway 183). The memorial celebration and wake begins at 3:00 p.m., at Austin Saengerrunde Hall located 1607 San Jacinto Blvd. (next door to Scholz Garden) - bring your 'Henry stories'. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Democratic Committee or to the local Democratic candidate of your choice.
