DENVER — Twenty years after her mother wowed the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, Cecile Richards took a lighter star turn Tuesday at the 2008 convention.
Richards, who is the president of Planned Parenthood, lacked the late Gov. Ann Richards' memorable drawl, and she didn't try to match her mother's taut wit — though the convention's speechwriting team gave her a joke referring to President Bush.

"After eight years of George Bush, you might be surprised that a Texan is president of Planned Parenthood," Richards told the convention. "After all, there aren't many people eager to see the words 'Texan' and 'president' in the same sentence ever again."
She cast Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, as an enemy of women's health care. She said he's voted 125 times on the wrong side of health issues, including votes against family planning funding and comprehensive sex education.
In morning remarks to the party's women's caucus, Richards said Planned Parenthood would work day and night to ensure that "five men in black robes don't know better than women what's best for their health care."
Richards also paid homage to Gov. Richards, saying: "My mother would have said that a woman voting for John McCain would be like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders."
Richards' 1988 convention keynote roused delegates with a reference to the first President Bush as being born with a silver foot in his mouth.
Texans at the current convention suggested Richards would make a strong candidate for statewide office, perhaps the U.S. Senate, where Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison could create a vacancy if she follows through on private vows to run for governor.
"We could use (Richards') strength and, through her, her mother's strength," said Travis County Attorney David Escamilla.
DeMetris Sampson, a Dallas lawyer whom Gov. Richards appointed to a university board of regents, said the state needs "good, dependable, qualified individuals who understand the struggle for equality and the need for the rights of all people being recognized."
Richards said running for an office isn't in her plans, though she speculated about her daughter, Lily Adams, being U.S. House material. "Just looking for a good congressional district for Lily, that's my goal," she said.
Adams, a senior in political science at Brandeis University, will cast her first vote in a presidential election this year. She said she doesn't know what she'll do after graduation.
But the mother and daughter keep a close watch on Texas politics.
Mindful of the GOP holding every statewide office since early 1999, plus majorities in the Texas House and Senate, Richards said: "We're going to take the state back, absolutely."
"It's going to turn," her daughter said.
