in 1963, a sophomore at UT, I lived at SRD with Karen Willis, Carol Bellamy (Landot) and Judy Sullivan (Clay). We were all just 19.  On that day, in our dorm room, several of us gathered, having had heard the news, were shocked and commisserating over the great loss, when Karen comes in, with with great drama flung herself across the bed, the back of her hand against her forehead and declared with disgust and dread, "Lyndon Johnson is now our president."

I was coming out of Mr. Prices English class at Austin High. Susan Todd (now Kramer) had heard the news on the radio at A-lunch; she told me. School was closed within an hour - everyone had been planning to walk the few blocks to Congress Ave. for the parade. I picked up my little brother at his first grade across the street and went home. Poor little six year old Sam, he could not figure out why his mother and sister were weeping in front of the tv-he tried clowning around to cheer us up. Didn't work.

I was outside the tower when a student in one of my classes
came rushing out. She said to me "The president is short."
She musta thought I was crazy as I kept saying the president
is short? until I understood.

I then took a walk around downtown 1963 Austin thinking
"Hey, they shot my president."
