Hi, Lin,
My sister-in-law, 14 years older than me, told me that funerals and
memorials become our more frequent social events as we get older. I assume
you knew Lonn. He and I had a long friendship from 1962 when I moved to
Austin to attend UT. We met through YD politics and we spent many times
together over the years including a few road trips to go to political
events and demonstrations for the Huelga. He even attended my wedding in
Castroville when I married Roy.
Most memorably he asked me to come to visit him in DC when he went to work
for the Smithsonian. When I got there he was just moving into his new condo
from Santa Fe. I helped him inventory all his possessions from the move, a
rare treat! I also got to meet Edith, who would become his wife. I was
staying with Frieda Werden then.
Twenty years later I attended their anniversary in Marfa at the Paisano
Hotel. There were many dinners, meetings, and book signings over the years.
He and Dedie treated me to one fabulous evening at the Driskill. On another
occasion, I attended a seated dinner for 10 at their house in Fort Davis,
with place cards! Dedie had placed me at Lonn's side, a place of honor,
where I regaled him with stories that kept him laughing through the
evening. Apparently he found me amusing. I counted him as a dear, dear
friend. I can't seem to stop mourning.
Best,
Frances"
