More about HEB home delivery.

Their website shows pics of the beers sold at the store. None are
"available" so HEB has for the moment decided not to get in the business
of home delivering booze. HEB is family owned, the founder H E Butts did
not permit booze to be sold in his chain of grocery stores. That was the
case when I came to Austin in 1963. As soon as the old man died, the
family commenced selling wine and beer. Back then Dan's Liquors sold
French wine and spirits at rock bottom prices. I wrote a piece for /The
Rag/ in which I pointed that out.

We live across the alley from /The Wine Merchant/ on sixth street. John
gives us a good case price on our favorite tipple - Louis Jadot
Beaujoulais-Village. HEB used to carry it but dropped carrying it. We're
talking $9 a bottle for a French red with no vices and some character.
Unfortunately, French white wine is in the $30 a bottle tier. When we
were living in Oklahoma, we scored a case of white Graves (a Bordeaux)
from the 24 hour a day booze palace in Oklahoma City. It was a vintage
1959, one of the great years, marked down to 69 cents a bottle. Go figure!

The HEB delivery system is quite primitive. No drone deliveries. First
time, a white retired type guy showed up in his car in front of our
apartment and delivered the bags curbside. This time, a deaf young
dread-locked black man who had use of a red pickup truck drove into our
alley, somehow gained entrance to the building, and delivered many bags
to our door on the third floor. He indicated to wife Madelon that he was
deaf but pointed to his smartphone which showed delivery info. I was
downstairs waiting in front. Wife Madelon brought him downstairs, he
went round to the alley and got his truck and drove it round to the
front and delivered yet more bags curbside.
HEB is to be commended for hiring a deaf man with the use of a truck who
could read smartphone delivery instructions and by hook and by crook
could get the job done and make the delivery. /Kudos/ to HEB!
