It seems that one can commence a Zoom conference immediately 
independently of scheduling one which I did for 10am today. On my screen 
I see two live video panels representing a conference between our 2 
computers one in the living room the other in the bedroom, the latter 
mostly used by wife Madelon.

So that conference is ongoing. How long will the connection hold? 40 
minutes? or indefinitely?

So if you want to Zoom with me, hie yourself to your device, open 
zoom.us, make yourself known to them, and when prompted supply the 
conference ID and then the conference password.

I'll write if the conference ends. For the moment it is an open 
conference which apparently anyone can join, with your audio enabled. As 
for enabling video, that's up to you. You can conference without being seen.
