Dear fellow Ragstaffer,
I am asking for your help in getting the word out about my new
book, /Voice Lessons/. It starts with my experience in our time
together and continues to present day activism.
My purpose in writing /Voice Lessons/ was to document the pieces of
our story that I know, starting in the civil rights movement, even
before the University Free Speech movement and SDS. In the process of
producing our 2016 Rag reunion book, /Celebrating The Rag/, it became
clear to me that if we do not write our story, it is lost forever, and
what we did is worth remembering. Documentation is critical. Leaving
crumbs so future generations can find the trail is so necessary. It's
an obligation, as well as a joy.
/Voice Lessons/ is being published by Tower Books and distributed by UT
Press. Follow my website link below to order the book from UT, or get
it through BookWoman in Austin. UT's Briscoe center will promote an
October 19th event. Because of Covid, that event may be virtual and
will certainly have limited seating.
However, Book Woman is sponsoring a Zoom meeting for me to
introduce /Voice Lessons/ to the public on Thursday, September 2, 2021.
It will be a conversation with Melissa Hield of People's History in
Texas, producers of The Rag film documentary. There is no limit on
attendance, but you will be asked to pre-register for the Zoom event.
You can do that by going to https://AliceEmbree.com and the Events tab.
We will record it, and plan to post it on YouTube. I would appreciate
it if you would come, and also ask any friends of yours that you think
would be interested.
With your support, I'm hoping for a successful gathering with
further events to follow. I'd especially like to do one with younger
activists on "Then and Now". If you are interested in participating in
or simply checking out future events, they will be posted on my website.
Also, we are still looking for libraries to order /Celebrating The
Rag/. Please contact your local libraries and ask them to order it
(Austin has), and if you or anyone you know writes reviews for library
journals, New Journalism Project, sponsor of The Rag Blog, would like to
know! We have another book in the works about /The Rag/'s Houston
cousin, /Space City!/. We hope to publish /Exploring Space City!:
Houston's Historic Underground Newspaper/ in November 2021. We want to
make sure both books can be found in libraries across the land.
You can reach me at alice at nuevoanden.com email. I prefer that to a
phone call right now.
Thank you for considering my requests,
Sisterhood is Powerful!, Dare to Struggle, Dare to Win!, and Onward
Through the Fog.
Alice Embree
