I should add that I find immense pleasure in moving the sheep from pasture to pasture...they all come running and then leap thru the gate.  all gity and excited about going somewhere new.  This fall, we experimented with flushing the ewes on an unfenced alfafa pasture for 5 or 10 min a day.  Kind of time consuming, but it became a bit of a game.  the ewes learned what was up and even cooperated in going back to the barn when I got bored of watching them, they seemed to have their fill.  I think there are pros and cons to any program but just wanted to add that sheep can get as excited about new pasture as they can about grain.  We use grain as a candy to get young lambs used to us, but find that they have to learn to like it, maybe because they haven't seen their mothers model it for them.  That surprised me.
