Someone once commented to me that "freckling was dominant because it skips a generation".
The problem with that is that, if it skips a generation, then by definition it is a recessive trait. I believe that it is more complicated than that [isn't everything]. In our flock, certain maternal lines show up with freckling more than others, but it tends to be worse in outcrosses. Inbred sheep tend to be 'cleaner' as are the occasional crossbreed. We breed for extensive leg markings and facial markings and have less freckling each year.
I have noticed in recent years that the most likely sheep to grey prematurely are the coarser fleeced and horned sheep. This may be an isolate of our flock.
How do you differentiate 'freckling' from 'ticking'?
Neal
