[Jacob-list] re: worming techniques

WE are still sorting thru our approach to wormers.  A friend of mine told
me that in the four yrs they had owned Jacobs they never wormed! I have
several of their sheep...very healthy animals. They did have more pasture
to rotate on and lived in a colder climate.  

Environment does make a difference, I think,especially rotation or large
acreage, but I will say that we have  experienced some lines seeming to be
more resistant to parasites than others. I really like the idea of not
covering over these traits by following a set worming schedule for the
whole flock. However, the thing I have learned since experiencing the ewe
with nose bots is that the other catagories of parasites (lungworms,
nosebots,etc) need to be watched out for using different symptoms as
guidelines.  That is, a sheep that never gets the runs but has extra fluid
from the nose or cough without other cold symptoms should be considered for
a worm load also. 

ONe other thought on this topic...  I have heard breeders say that
inbreeding caused an inability to adjust to new environments.  Wasn's sure
how I felt about inbreeding when I saw the Twigg flock (15 yrs on the same
ram) They looked fine to me.  HOwever, it did seem this summer that the
Twiggs had more difficulties adjusting than most Jacobs. For the most part
healthy and happy, periodically they would get liquid diarrhea, or show
signs of tapeworms. We have never dealt much with worms here, but these
sheep all had to be penned up a few times off pasture and wormed to stop
the diarrhea problem... except for the lambs that were brought here has
newborns, they never got the runs at all!  Interesting and I am not sure
what to make of it.  Seems all have cleared up now and hopefully next year
they will have adjusted completely, as they are great sheep and I would
miss them on the property.  The runs are not something I want to deal with
on a regular basis.  I am spoiled by no-care sheep. Katrina Lefever,
