A hearty "thank you" to everyone for your helpful suggestions and insight
regarding our little 3 lb. lamb.....and yes, she is gaining weight. We
have given her a BoSe injection, Vit. B injections, she is receiving oral
Vit. E and had an oral dose of Vit. A & D. Her mother is not producing
much milk - probably because of lack of stimulation -- I try to put the
lamb to the mother periodically but it's not the same as the frequent
nursing that happens with a lamb with normal ambulation. I purchased
goat colostrum from a local goat breeder which we bottle fed for the
first two days in addition to her mother's milk and we have gradually
replaced that with lamb milk replacer which we are giving at a more
diluted rate. This little lamb is absolutely incredible, always has had
a healthy interest in nursing and continues with a very plucky, "can do"
attitude. Every day she is stronger, although she is still not standing.
She now can raise her rear end up with her rear legs and even tries to
sort of crawl along in that manner on her front knees. If she continues
in the same fashion, it appears she will be walking in a few days. We
have her in the same lambing jug as her mother, but have a section of
cattle panel between them -- her mother is very unhappy that she can't
walk and constantly is pawing the ground around the baby and we were
concerned for her safety. The mother has great concern for the lamb and
they both respond to each other's voices - and the lamb has no interest
in nursing from any of our other ewes - but suckles vigorously with her
mother. It remains to be seen if the mother will be an OK mother when
this little one finally walks - the mother is a "first timer" and is
rather schitzy - in fact, she has been the wildest Jacob we have ever
had........which is interesting because her mother is one of our very
tamest.
Gotta run - it's time to warm the bottle. Thanks again - Jacob people
are the greatest!!!
