Do make sure that if you use DE in the feed, that it isn't the stuff for
pools.  Swimming pool DE is treated/heated or something that makes it
poisonous for consumption.  From FEDCO Seeds Catalogue:  "DE comes in two
grades: Pool filter grade, which is chemically treated and partially
melted, is a respiratory hazard for mammals and is not to be used for
insect control.  The natural grade does not pose a respiratory hazard and
is the right type to use for insect control."

As for research, there is no research proving that DE works, as I
understand it, because there hasn't been any clear research on its use. 
There is, however, grant money available if there were any farmers
interested in proving it.
