Mary Ellen and all;
I am so envious of you having Kevin Ford shear your sheep! I have his book "Shearing Day" and he seems like such a wonderful guy and shearer! I had Lisa Truman, one of his students, shear last year and their techniques are so sheep friendly! The first year we had sheep we had a horrible man who urinated in front of us, kicked and cut up my sheep and my husband almost picked him up by the scruff and threw him back in his little truck. We were so happy to find a gentle shearer and that is our top priority over anything else. We do shear our llamas and alpacas ourselves, but I would rather pay someone to shear the sheep as it is worth it and goes so much faster than us doing it.

Jacobs are fun and do need to be shorn. I sheared my own for several years before Kevin Ford started coming by regularly. This year with 41, I was REALLY hoping he would come :o). Getting a shearer is usually not the simplest of tasks. Talk to the people who sell you sheep. They will have information for your area. This year, I paid $3.00/head and a 20 or 25 dollar set-up fee---total was $140. In NC, I shear in February. I have other friends here who shear in April and June.
