    To be honest, a $1500 retainer does not sound too bad.  Ask the lawyer
how many hours that would cover or is he considering the 1500 to be the
total cost.  You can also talk to him about a payment plan.  I think what is
most important to find someone you feel like you can talk with, who listens,
and who answers your questions.  It would also be good to find someone who
is already somewhat familiar with VT law and livestock.  I wonder if you ask
around at your local feed store or any local farmers if anyone knows anyone
with experience in livestock related issues.
    I spoke with my brother, a lawyer, and his take was that it will be
expensive.  Sorry.
