I woke up yesterday to find that I had lost a yearling ram overnight. The
ram was going to go to market because two of the four horns were not
consistent (the horn curved forward one one side and back on teh other to
give the illusion that it was a written "F" moving through the skull). He
joined two others that are buried on the down side of the pond.
My sheep didn't get sheared last year due to the deasth of my wife on the
day that the shearer called to say he was coming so my older sheep look
rather ratty except for the smooth top where they have combed the fleece on
barbed wire fensing The yearling look very good and it hurt to loose the
hide more than the meat. The sheep wasn't in bad shape when I found him and
I wonder if anyone has ever been able to even tried to save a hide. We have
been able to get $100-125 for a tanned hide with fleece in the local market.
