In my experience sheep shearers are very independent
types and you just need to keep calling. Also we
tried to shear one ourselves this year and it was a
disaster! There is also more to it than meets the eye
like keeping the skin in the right tension and
direction at all times so the wool comes off without
carving up the skin of the sheep and you do not get a
lot of "second cuts" while holding a heavy sheep off
the ground in the front. There are classes on
shearing around the country..our guy goes every year
to polish up. I would attend one of those before
trying to shear myself.
We have him come to our place and so we have to
get on his schedule for next year as soon as he
completes the shearing this spring as he fills up
quickly. I am also offering for other people who
bought sheep from us and only have a few to come with
their sheep on the same day so it will be more worth
his while. Maybe you could see if others are shearing
and would let you add yours in. We would shear in a
place that would not let the outside sheep spread any
illnesses to our sheep.
We do not shear the lambs till the next spring as
that is the best wool they will have and we like it as
long in fiber as possible to make things for
ourselves. I know the commercial sheep get their
lambs sheared before putting them out on the pasture
but then again they do lots of things we do not do
with Jacobs. :-)
