> When the State of Ca. vet was here she said the
sheep only need tags if they are leaving your place.
If they come with a tag you need to keep the tag with
the rest of each sheep's records so they can be traced
back to the original flock if they stay on your farm
or go with the records if sold. She said to just tag
again when they leave the farm to go to another flock.
Since most diseases they are concerned about are
passed at birth from the ewe, they do not even worry
too much about rams anymore or wethers, at least in
Ca.
We tag with the smallest Scrapie ones you pay for
from Premier and they go in very slick and make a
smaller hole than the buttons and they can have your
flock name and number on them. I have put in both and
the tags are much less traumatic to the sheep than the
buttons. So far not a problem with any of the tags
ever pulling out. We are on the program where after 5
years your flock is declared scrapie free.
Now they are going to start a new program with
metal ear tags that every sheep in the U.S. will have
to have soon because they want to trace every sheep in
the US to make the whole country scrapie free. Because
we are on the tye of program where we are inspected
once a year, we will just continue with the kind of
tags we already have.
Personally, I find 3 different kinds of ear tags
programs kind of confusing to follow. Especially in
buying from another flock. If you get a sheep from a
flock that has been on the program (at least the one
where your flock is declared scrapie free after 5
years)less years than your flock, you have to put the
whole flock status back to the lower year number. It
quickly restricts the flocks you can buy from without
losing your years in the program. I do think it is
worth it though to have a flock that is declared
scrapie free. It is a little thing that I can do to
make the public more comfortable about sheep not
being disease vectors.
I realize this kind of program is more challanging
the bigger your flock. So it is only a personal
choice with my 6. Victoria
