and with the triangle shape they attach in the ear
with just a narrow tab making less contact with the
ear than the circles. Then they are in just both
sides and so they cannot hook something with the outer
loop as some of the other tags do. This is my
objection with the new national metal tags. I think
that there is a danger with the outer loop hooking
into things. The 2X tags are also much lighter than
the buttons and so I think the ears do not have as
much effect from them. Right after they are inserted,
my sheep just go right to grazing....not even try to
kick it off or even hold their ear down so I think
they too feel it is less painful.
I know the hole is smaller because I had to take
out some of the tags that were not on the program and
put program tags in and the Premier tags had plenty of
extra room from the other holes. The State vet said
in the future to just tag the other ear and leave in
the nonprogram tag on the original ear because you are
to keep all tags ever put on the sheep to trace back
to the other flock...program or not. Luckily, I had
not disposed of the old tags yet and so have them with
my records.
I personaly wanted the smallest tag possible and
think the buttons look too bulky and like they take up
too much of the little ears the Jacobs have. This is
a preference on "style" but also now hearing all the
pulled tag stories I am glad we decided to go with
tags that connect with a tab and are open on the end
so they do not snag and give as much air possible to
the ear under the tag. I think my babies look snazzy
with their nice green tags ;-).
