I have heard of sheep dying from eating large quantities of acorns, not
because of the toxicity, but because they swallowed them whole.  Apparently,
being round (ish) the acorns did not pass through the digestive system but
collected in the stomach and prevented the animals eating anything else.
Sheep were found dead with stomachs full of unaltered acorns.

This is not a personal experience but was reported by a breeder of Shetland
sheep here in Britain.
