[Jacob-list] Hay Issues

  Hi everyone!  We live in Estern Wa near Spokane and have five acres.  Currently, I do not own any Jacobs but I would eventually like to.  I have Shetlands, 2 Bolivian llamas and Chilean llamas but I want to sell this place and get more land so I can have my own pastures too.  Here the word is that besides the lack of rain for this year, the rest of the hay went to Japan! So, we  are hurting for hay.  I was able to obtain 3 tons of Organic hay in the beginnig of July and at the end of August I came across a local farmer via the local free paper that had 100 bales of 800-900 pounds each of grass hay.  I acquired 4 more just in case.  He is totally sold out now and he did ship most of his to Japan too.  So, between the lack of rain and being shipped out of the country, hay is becoming a commodity and it is harder and harder to find unless you pay premium prices which are over $200. per ton.  At the beginning of the hay season, you could  buy a ton for $100.00 of the small
 bales.  It has doubled.  The local fee store still have some nice hay at $10.00 a small bale it went up $1  in one week.I bought than enough since I placed a lot of my Shetland with my friend for herto do spinning and knitting-so I am down to 4 and the 3 llamas.  This is my first winter here and my first farm ever.  So, I am a newbie to the world of sheep and I am learning so much.
  My friend who llamas and horse is having a very hard time finding hay for her critters-I started to stock up early and since I am new I did not have first choice.  Many farmers have returning customers with orders so I feel very blessed that I was able to find what I found for my babies.
