It is most certainly a scam email. His account has been hacked, and it
is highly likely that he cannot access it to reply at the moment... so
asking him to confirm via email is not going to be a successful
venture. If anyone knows him in person, you may want to give him a
call and tell him that his email is compromised. Otherwise, there
isn't much we can do other than NOT sending any money or responding in
any way.
