<P>Paying less is always the better alternative.</P>
<P>I would not pay full price for 18" rims either (that is why I have one-piece 16" AMG rims on my 560 SEC...), my point was that <EM>if</EM> you insist on very large wheels, weight is a very important consideration. If you have the weight, you can only partially alleviate the problem with other suspension modifications (shocks, springs, etc.) which costs money too. Or you can accept the deterioration in ride/handling.</P>
<P>If the goal is improvements in ride and handling, there are many ways of achieving that and you can play around with all the factors to arrive at the best price/performance solution.</P>
<P>I just think you'd get a lot more bang for your buck by going with smaller wheels.</P>
<P>Check out the 1976 Formula 1,Tyrrell-Cosworth P34 six-wheeler. Who says you can't get great performance with small wheels?<IMG height=19 src="http://graphics.hotmail.com/i.p.emwink.gif" width=19></P>
<P>These are 10" and capable of hadling Fomula 1 speeds, braking and cornering.</P>

If you can pick up at set on the cheap as Talbir has done, then the equation changes and becomes more attractive. However, using Talbir's estimate of $4500 for a set of new 3-piece wheels vs about $1200 for one piece leaves $3300 left over for suspension or other mods that might have a more significant impact on performance.

<DIV></DIV>>We all know that the ride goes to hell if you put those 20" rims on a car (or 24"+ on Cadillac SUVs..). A lot of it has to do with the tires with non-existent sidewalls, shortened and harsh springs, etc., but a significant part of it is due to the added weight of the wheels themselves.

<DIV></DIV>>So, if you want the bigger wheels (which will alter the suspension parameters), it is all the more important to pay attention to the weight issue to lessen the overall negative impact.
