[W126 Coupe] RADAR DETECTORS

I have an existing system wired and concealed in the front grill and under 
the rear bumper with a head unit set low under the drivers foot well and 
wired to the ignition switch for power.  Questions are who manufactured this 
type of system, what unit would I need to upgrade to the latest technology, 
preferably using the existing wiring harness and do radar detectors really 
work where laser technology is now used???
