I just wanted to thank all of you who contributed to my question re the
non-movable seat.  As it turns out, I found a suitable contact-cleaner
from Radio Shack and sprayed the heck out of the contacts in the door
switch as I worked it back and fourth.  The 2nd or 3rd try had some
movement and persistence payed off!  ( I chickened out of opening the
switch box)  I will be tackling the seat-belt retractor this coming
weekend.
