[W126 Coupe] Broken Drivers side mirror

Toomey, Mark (IM) Mark.Toomey at morganstanley.com
Tue Jan 25 14:27:35 EST 2005

Does anyone in the group know where I can get a replacement mirror for my '91 SEC?. Maybe someone out there has a mint used one - would appreciate finding out as last week's snowstorm caused a hairline crack across the face. Would like to keep the car concours without getting killed on price!

Hi Jack,

Which AMG wheel is is that you have ? The 3-piece or 2-piece ??

I might be able to get my hands on a used wheel or one which has a knackered outer rim but intact centre piece.

Hi James,

Not sure on the part no for the connector, but if you give MB delaership
parts a call with your chassis number and they should be able to pull up the
diagram of the oil sender arrangement. It should only cost a couple of
dollars.

The loom going from sender to dash usually has a second two pin connector
plug in-line, where it runs up near the wiper motor to the fusebox. Check
that the conenctions are intact at that plug too.

Isn't this the wheel with the recall on it? Not sure, but remember it being
mentioned awhile back.

Well, I now know why the oil pressure is doing what it does. What I
don't know is why the engine is doing what it does to cause the oil
pressure to do...what it does. What's happening is this. I slow down and
pull up to the light. As I do this the engine rpms drop (as they
should), but instead of stopping at the proper idle rpm of 650, they
keep dropping to about 480rpm. Then after I've been stopped for a couple
seconds, the engine will surge, bringing the rpms up from 480 to the
proper 650. At the same time as the engine surges, the oil pressure goes
up to the proper level and the economy gauge goes 1/6 of the way out and
back. Sometimes it won't surge, it will just keep the pressure low and
the rpms down at 480 and the engine will run a little rough, but 90% of
the time it does the surging thing (I didn't notice it before because I
was looking for the rpm gauge to go up from normal, not up TO normal).
So, any ideas why my idle speed is low (albeit usually self-correcting)?
Also, I checked the oil again. It's just below the max line and
looks/feels like brand new oil (I guess the fact that almost all of the
miles have been highway kept the oil clean).
Thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard,

It would be worth trying 15W40, just to see if there is any change in
your pressure when coming to a stop. We use Shell Rotella 15W40 in all
the Porsches (Porsche recommends Shell, and is the oil they are shipped
from the factory with)and also the Mercedes, we service at our shop.
It's a good oil that has done very well for us on the track (Solo 2
autocross), and has done well in our personal cars, so we recommend it
to our customers ( with the exception of some close-tolerance engines in
the later cars which require 5W30, we use Mobil One in those ). You are
in an area that gets a good deal colder than it does here. We
occasionally drop into single digits for a couple of days or so, but
Knoxville generally averages in the 30's and 40's most of the winter
(usually from late November 'til about early March), so I haven't had
any first-hand experience with really cold temps and oil pressure
problems. Try the 15W40 and see what happens, then go from there. It
won't cost much,!
and it might solve the problem.

What do I need to do to adjust my headlights? I find lots or Euro
adjustments by using the adjustment knob, but I don't have Euro lights, nor
do I have an adjustment knob. I couldn't find anything in the archives.

What I do have are just the left/right and up/down adjustment screws on each
headlight. I need to know how far from the car to set the beams, how high
from the ground, and distance between centerlines of the left and right
lights.

Hmmm...didn't we all just have this discussion on the pros and cons of solid vs multi-piece wheels? I believe one of the pro comments on multi-piece was that repairs are easy and less expensive because you simply replace the damaged part.

Here's link on how to properly aim headlights
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/aim/aim.html

I wasn't away of any left to right adjustment. The only ones I know of
are the up down adjustment and the angle of the kink in the beam
adjustment (the light has a flat part and then there's a kink where the
beam angles up). Both are plastic knob-like things (they would be knobs,
but they stick out far, they're 13mm hex) on the back of the headlight
unit. The third knob AFAIK is for the fog lights, though mine don't seem
to do anything.

Jim,

Just note that a 10.5 inch wheel width is measured on the inside of the rim where the tire makes the seal. The overall width of that wheel is probably closer to 11 inches.
The other interesting thing I learned from Luke at Tire Rack is that the 275mm tire width number referenced below is the sectional width of the tire, not the tread width... When clearance issues are concerned, tread width is sometimes more relevant as this is the outermost width of the tire. Depending on the manufacturer of the tire, the tread width will vary up to a half inch within the same "tire Size".
I would also stay close to the overall diameter of the tire to stock which is aprox. 25.5"... 275/40-17 would be good. The 285/40-17 you were planning on using have an overall diameter of 26"... This would throw off your speedometer.
I found these links below from The Tire Rack very helpful in understanding wheel and tire sizes and offsets... Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/general/size.jsp
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/offset.jsp

Leave the B.F. Hammer for something a little less accurate like a Rolex watch...

Jim,

I think you'll need to do the following :

- use 20mm spacers in the rear

- fit 275's and not 285's. Tyre of 275 is more than you need on a 10.5 inch
wheel as the wheel is approx 267mm.

- from memory, you'll need to use specific bolts with the BBS wheels, since
they have a recessed centre and without spacers require bolts wth very small
shaft lengths. With 20mm spcaers you may only need botls which have a 55mm
shaft length - you'll have to work this out by measuring up the bol shaft
that protudes from the rear of the wheel when inserted. In summary, don't
work to the MB bolt formula of 40mm + spacer width.

I don't think that should be too much of a problem once you have the 20mm
hubcentric spacers. Shame, as I sold a set of original H&R 20mm spacers two
weeks ago for about 60USD.

To give you an idea, the original AMG wheels (as I have on my 560) are 10 x
17 et 17. Now if you run 20mm sacers, your et will be down to 18, which
should work, as you are only running an extra half-inch of wheel, which in
reality is 0.25 inches - since I think the only concen is going to be the
wheel rubbing on the inner well, not the outer fender lip.

With 10.5 width and ET 18 (38-20), you'll have an extra 6.35mm of metal on
the inner side in direct comparison to my 10 width with ET 17, plus the
extra millimetre of offset means you are a total of 7.35mm closer to the
inner wheel well than my AMG's. Now Satish is running 10 inch wheels with ET
25mm - that's 8mm closer to the inner wheel well than my AMG's and that
works. So I fairly confident your BBS's will work with 20mm spacers and 275
tyres.

If not, there's always the B.F. hammer one can utilise...

I wouldn't change the outer rims on the BBS to reduce width - as then you'll
lose the deep dish effect whch is what those wheels are all about. You need
deep dishes on the rear wheels....

By idle speed control do you mean the idle control valve? Could I just clean that out with brake cleaner? I suppose I should also give the vacuum hoses going to it a look over? Or are you referring to the throttle body or physical linkage? That all can be cleaned with brake cleaner, right?

> The instruments are faithfully recording the goings-on under the lid.

Well, I suppose that's something to celebrate about.

I have seen much the same thing in my car a year or so ago and if the engine does not actually stall while you wait at the lights then I would not worry too much about it.

No, it doesn't stall (this car has an uncanny ability to not stall. Sometimes if I let off the starter too early and it catches but only at like 200 rpms, the engine will stumble for a bit and then slowly pick up).

> Otherwise, (1) You're looking too closely. (2) The car needs an >exorcism.

Well, number one is definitely true, I'm just wondering what happens with other people's when they look too close. As far as the exorcism, I'm not ruling that out totally either. It's one thing after another with this car, but the way I see it, I'll eventually replace so many parts it will be like a new car!

One thing I forgot to ask: could this be mixture related? I'm never
convinced that I have that setting just right, though I suppose it
wouldn't just go out of whack for no reason either.

Richard

Part of your problem seems to be in the idle speed control, which may be
either intermittent or perhaps a little slow in its action, sometimes.
Your throttle may be closing just slightly too far when you lift your
right foot. This causes a low idle. From your postings over the past
few days it seems that this does not always happen. The reason could be
some kind of mechanical binding created by dirt, gum or uneven wear
arounf the throttle etc.

With low idle (480rpm) your oil pressure will also be a little on the
low side. This is normal. The "economy" gauge, actually a vacuum
gauge, measures the vacuum in the inlet manifold and the vacuum will
drop slightly as the throttle opens under automatic control (probably
just slightly too far) to bring the idle up to its setpoint of 650rpm.
It then closes slightly which increases the vacuum a little. (This
small overcompensation is also normal in most automatic systems unless
they are very expensively made, it's sometimes called hunting.) The
instruments are faithfully recording the goings-on under the lid.

I have seen much the same thing in my car a year or so ago and if the
engine does not actually stall while you wait at the lights then I would
not worry too much about it. Something that should be fixed but does
not need an emergency tow to the MB dealers to fix it immediately.

I have no explanation for the oil pressure needle twitching with only
the ignition on except to suggest that if it occurs while you move
around inside the car than there is probably a loose wire in the system
somewhere. OTOH it remind me of the fact that if you turn a flashlight
on and leave it the light output will sometimes flicker even if you are
not touching the flashlight at that instant to disturb the connections.
That sort of thing may be characteristic of battery systems. Otherwise,
(1) You're looking too closely. (2) The car needs an exorcism.

Spot-on - if that was a single piece wheel he'd have to chuck it.

All that needs to be done is source a centre piece and swap it over, as the
inner rim and outer rim are both intact.

Thanks for your quick reply, if I find that other connector I'll
remove the short loom and replace it.
But I'll give your second suggestion a try first.

Stright to 3 when I switch ignition on and will not move until ignition is
off. then its straight to zero.
Just replaced oil, filter and sender unit so I think its a bad electric
connector.

How in the wide wide world of sports do you work in such a dark
environment? You ought to get some serious lighting installed in there,
and some cleaning. Then again, I'm easily disturbed by clutter and
darkness, so maybe it's just me.

Hi, Sharon. It is a 2 piece, disc type wheel with the rim secured to the hub
in a wide circle in the outer circumference the by a closely set ring of
small set-bolts with tamper-proof heads. Would like to purchase a hub if you
have one. Can send a photo if needed. Jack.

Correction on the construction of the wheel. I don't have the car at home,
it is at the mechanics' shop. Maybe it is 3 piece & I did not examine it
properly. Will check. Jack.
