Ah the oil thread. Seen this on so many vehicle sites it is scary. On
the Harley site we actually had a guy who worked for some chemical testing
lab and here was the skinny from him and confirmed from several manufacturesa..
When breaking in a rebuilt or new engine... run Mineral oil until broke
in.. this helps cam/lifter and pistonring/bore seating and will prolong
the life of the engine.. after that Syn is a better oil but most minerals
now days are good also.
Changing from Mineral to Synth.. no problemo!!!
Changing from Synth to Mineral, difference of opinion from most, a definite
nono if the synth contains graphite!!!!
Mixing oils.. should be avoided but can be used until next change.
Changing intervals... all agreed that under 7000 miles you are wasting your
money!..
most stated that with Synths change the filer and get 10000-12000 between
changes.
TYpes... all had their opinions.. the chemist and consumer reports said
that mineral oils, the cheapest are just as good as the best with the same
ratings... Wal Mart brand scored REALLY high..better then the brand names...
The synths are all about the same with Mobile 1 scoring at the top..
That was from many expert sources and took several months to compile.. of
course i briefed it for you all it was like 100 pages after compiled...
Just my bit
