[W126 Coupe] where is that smell coming from?

Hi Rich,
If you're fairly certain it's an exhaust smell, check all the points where hoses, wiring, control linkages, etc. come through the firewall, if you do have an exhaust leak, the gas could be entering around bad or missing grommets, sealer could have dried up and fallen out, leaving gaps, plugs in unused holes sometimes get knocked out during repairs, or grommets get overlooked or not properly refitted.
