Dan, the dip-stick tube goes all the way to within a few millimeters of 
the lowest point in the oil pan. MB engineers designed it that way. It 
will suck virtually all of the oil in the pan. After sucking, you can 
take the drain plug out and no oil will come out.

I should make a revision to my suggestion for using a different tubing. 
I found that 3/8"ID fuel hose worked just right for me. The various 
sized hoses available may have different ODs, so you may have to adjust 
so that you get a reasonably tight fit in the top of the dip stick 
tube. My hose's fit in the top of the dip-stick tube is not real tight, 
but it doesn't seem to affect the suction. YMMV.
