Hi Gligor and Mario,

Gligor's position is a very good example for the Finzer's cathegory 2 (see Richter's
february 26th message, "promotion:..."), i.e., a partially executed move determined
by the position itself in connection with the stipulation.

Half castling belonging to cathegory 3 (exclusively determined by the position and
its analysis): I know now three antecedents (two from the Mario's mail),

Werner Keym, Original (i.e. Schwalbe Heft 8, April 1971)
8/1p1N1PP1/1p2QB2/1B5P/4RNP1/5k1P/3P3P/6KR (15 +3)
w: Nd7 Pf7 Pg7 Qe6 Bf6 Bb5 Ph5 Re4 Nf4 Pg4 Ph3 Pd2 Ph2 Kg1 Rh1
b: Pb7 Pb6 Kf3
What happens?

Joseph Haas, Original (i.e. Schwalbe Heft 8, April 1971)
1B6/P2p1p2/Pp4N1/1B6/1PQ1R3/P1N2k1P/P2P3P/6KR (16+4)
w: Bb8 Pa7 Pa6 Ng6 Bb5 Pb4 Qc4 Re4 Pa3 Nc3 Ph3 Pa2 Pd2 Ph2 Kg1 Rh1
b: Pd7 Pf7 Pb6 Kf3
What happens?

How does this end?

The first two problems' intention is, as far as I see, to show Ke1-g1 as the last action
in order to leave g2 available for the bK. From the material point of view, Werner's is
the most economical one (I'm surely missing something, but why couldn't be the retro
in this problem -1. g3-g4, c7xXb6 -2. f2xNg3 or something like that?).

On the other hand, the 3rd problem is the one showing the longest retro
(2.5 single moves). These are nice and very traditional tasks. Say, show a position
where the retroanalysis proves that castling is on the process, looking for the records,

* the most economical position
* the longest retroanalysis

Are there any better antecedents in terms of these records?

Best,
Roberto

Hi, Roberto

See that problem

Gligor Denkovski & Miroslav Stosic
Mlad borec 1971 (v)

Kg1 Rh1 Bc1 Bh5 Sg6 Sh4 Ph3 - Kg3
#1.5
1.Bf4#? 1.Sf5#? No last black move!
Retro: The last black move was Kg2-g3, before wK move from e1 to f1 (first
part of 0-0).
1.Rf1-f1!! (ends 0-0) Kxh3 2.Rf3#

Best,
Gligor
