All of this surprises me; I had assumed that the normal check and mate
rules still apply (as was apparently the intention for Werner's problem),
which would mean that 8 Nxe6 checks the King as well, and that pawns
aren't quite royal because an attack on the pawn can be defended by
giving check or pinning the attacker (or defending the pawn if its
attacker is the King).
