Thank you for your content rich reaction. I will need some time to read and
appreciate it.
At this moment just a partial response. My last message was only aimed at
the semantics of the 3R convention, not to its relationship with DR or any
other condition. The question was, is "considered as a draw" something else
than "is a draw" in the context of retro problems? I tried to answer that.
The concept of "system decisions" is part of the role play I havén't
started to describe yet. All roles are assigned to fictitious characters
and performed by only one artist, the problem solver - and before him of
course by the problem author. I consider the role play necessary to get
clarity on the subject but I can't exclude that other approaches achieve
the same goal.
I regularly do my solving and composing in a chess cafe and get
interrogated by visitors with varying degrees of understanding of chess.
Until I explain that I must play both the white and the black side to the
best of my ability, some of them don't get what I'm doing. We as
problemists are so accustomed to this role play that we no longer think of
it in that way but it helps to create structure in our thinking and
activities. Ordinary chess problems require very simple role plays compared
to retro problems as they work only with known game states. As soon as
uncertainty is introduced, all hope of delivering indisputable evidence
disappears. "Justification" takes the place of "proof" and depends on
agreement on basic postulates. A role play that reflects the structure of
the retro field is very helpful in achieving insight and agreement.
