Oh dear – we invited him to Amherst College about 15 years ago to give a couple of talks.  (A strange event.)

Dear retro friends,

I have received second-hand information that the logician and musician Raymond Smullyan passed away peacefully last night after a stroke.

Amongst many other books of logic puzzles, he was the author of the very well-written "Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes", which remains the most common way for most chess players to have encountered chess retrograde analysis.
