For years I had a small group of sheep and felt I 'didn't need a border
collie'. Then Dots came my way. She had been trained with sheep trials in
mind but didn't have trialing intensity. She is a delight to live with and
goes at sheep management with a steady thoughtful approach. I can't imagine
working sheep without her.
I'd guess it really pays to invest in a trained dog or put in the time with
a trainer. I have seen things get LOTS WORSE in a hurry using dogs to herd
animals.
