Hi,
I have been thinking about a herding dog for over a year now. I had a ram
and ewe lamb this fall that made me really desire one.
It has been the rare occasion, though, for me when there was a true need for
a dog. We have things set up so the sheep are used to a routine. I can
sucker them in for feed and close doors behind me, locking all in a fairly
small space if I need to work with one of them. I also have my sheep used
to my presence---some of them are downright obnoxious getting in between my
legs, pushing me out of the way, and demanding attention. I know of some
flocks that aren't as close to their sheep, but just cannot imagine having
these lovely critters if I couldn't snuggle, hug, and get close to them
routinely. With this in mind, it is not simple justifying another expense,
which has kept me looking rather than purchasing a dog.
Also be aware that there is a very active rescue network of people around
the country. There are usually people very willing and able to help you
find a dog that will fit in with what your needs are. These are people who
love the individual breed, know their animals, etc.
